Eddy Reynoso says the window for a Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) vs. David Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) fight has closed now that Benavidez is competing at cruiserweight.
A clash between the pair was heavily demanded when Canelo and Benavidez were both competing at super-middleweight, but the long-awaited showdown was never reached.
Canelo remains at 168 pounds, with Reynoso confirming the former undisputed champion plans to stay in the division with several new opponents beginning to emerge.
“We’re going to stay at super middleweight for now. The division is heating up, and we can really stay busy there for the foreseeable future,” Reynoso said.
Benavidez has since moved beyond light-heavyweight and established himself at cruiserweight, stopping Gilberto Ramirez in the sixth round to become the unified WBA and WBO champion. With the pair now separated by two weight divisions, Reynoso believes the opportunity for them to meet has passed.
“That fight against Benavidez is done. There was a time when that fight could have been made at 168, and it didn’t happen, so it’s done.”
Reynoso added that Benavidez is now more likely to face Oleksandr Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs) than Canelo.
Alvarez is scheduled to challenge WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli on October 31, while Benavidez could pursue another world title opportunity at cruiserweight.
