Canelo-Chavez Headed to T-Mobile Arena
The Cinco de Mayo mega-fight between Mexican boxers Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the venue that Canelo christened back in May when he fought Amir Khan. Canelo-Chavez takes place on May 6.
While Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) has been planning a move up to 160 lbs. — for the much-delayed fight with Gennady Golovkin, fans hope — the fight with Chavez will take place at a catchweight of 164.5 lbs. Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has not recently fought below the super-middleweight limit, and has had struggles in the past making even 168.
Though many have criticized Golden Boy Promotion’s unwillingness to have Canelo fight Golovkin at 160 because he "needed time to grow into the division", Canelo jumping up to 164.5 for this Chavez fight is proof of how lucrative the fight will be for all involved. Chavez boasts the name of his father, arguably the most beloved fighter in Mexican history, and Canelo is the biggest pay-per-view draw in the sport currently.
On paper, the matchup appears one that Canelo will be able to win easily unless Chavez can use his size to his advantage. Despite the stakes not being huge on paper, the fight will provide a massive event for Cinco de Mayo and an entertaining warmup to what is hopefully a September fight between Canelo and Golovkin.
