Canelo Confirms His Fight With Munguia For May 4

Canelo Alvarez has announced his fight with Jaime Munguia for May 4.

Alvarez will defend his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title against the undefeated Mexican on Cinco de Mayo Weekend. It may not have been the David Benavidez fight, but it does end the speculation over Canelo’s immediate future. Oscar De La Hoya was initially coy over a potential Munguia fight with Canelo.

“There’s nothing I can say about that literally. I do know Canelo is fighting on Cinco de Mayo. Those are his dates. There’s been a lot of chatter about this fight [Canelo vs. Munguia], but right now, there’s zero news whatsoever. Canelo is the champion now and the man in boxing. I have to respect that and Cinco de Mayo and September until he’s finished, then somebody else will take over. That’s just the way it is. I’m pretty sure that when the fighters are ready to speak, they’ll speak,” De La Hoya stated

Canelo had announced his departure from PBC with two fights remaining under his deal. PBC restarted talks over a potential Munguia fight, which has now been finalized. The fight will take place on Amazon Prime PPV with PBC, but it is unclear if the fight will feature on another network.

“Mexicans to the war cry. See you on May 4 at the T-Mobile in Las Vegas #CaneloMunguia.”
