Canelo Considering His Next Fight

Canelo Alvarez is considering his next opponent with the Mexican likely to face Terence Crawford over David Benavidez.

Canelo maintained his stance of only fighting Benavidez for a big sum following his victory over Jaime Munguia. The current figure wanted by Alvarez is $150-200 million. Since Canelo is undisputed champion at 168, he calls the shots. The WBC has not ordered Benavidez as the mandatory. They have also not stripped Canelo, leaving Benavidez looking elsewhere.

Canelo could be biding his time to face Benavidez at his weakest. If Canelo puts a rehydration clause in place, it could harm Benavidez who would be coming down from 175. Fans saw this when Oscar De La Hoya drained himself from over 150 to face Manny Pacquiao at a 145-pound catchweight.

The Mexican Monster will box Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Belt on June 15. A win puts him mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol, who are fighting for undisputed at 175. While Benavidez said he would come down to 168 only for Canelo, he felt Alvarez had no interest in making that fight.

“Nobody’s going to give 200 million for that. If somebody can come up to 200 million we make a go fund account maybe we’ll get it, but as of right now, nobody’s giving 200 million for that fight. I think he’s getting put into a corner now where he’s running out of excuses. He said the only thing I bring is 25 extra pounds and I’m not worth nothing, but he’s asking for 200 million,” Benavidez said

However, the Saudis want to make Canelo vs. Crawford. Bud is working closer with the Saudis now that he is a free agent. Crawford boxes against Israil Madrimov in a WBA Junior Middleweight Title clash on August 3. Before this fight, Bud was chasing undisputed at 168 against Canelo. The Mexican dismissed the fight, saying he would get no praise for beating a 147 fighter. However, Bud is a less risky fight. He has never boxed at the weight class, making it more like another Jermell Charlo fight. If the money is right, it could happen.

“I’m working to deliver [Canelo], but it will be big fight [for Crawford]. I’ll discuss with him the names,” Saudi statement
