Canelo Dodges Benavidez, Eyes Bivol-Beterbiev Winner

Canelo Alvarez will not fight David Benavidez despite continued calls on the Mexican to make the bout.

Canelo’s decision to face Jaime Munguia on May 4 drew widespread criticism. Benavidez has been his WBC mandatory for over two years, giving him more reason to get the undisputed title shot. Canelo accused team Benavidez of disrespecting him, which is why Munguia was chosen.

Alvarez also demanded $150-200 million to make the Benavidez fight. While Canelo attempted to price himself out, Benavidez responded by saying he would take a rehydration clause to push the fight over the line. There are worries from Canelo’s camp that Benavidez is too big. Even with that concession, Canelo was looking elsewhere.

“And then what? You’re going to talk about that clause. When I beat him, they’re going to say that I put that clause. I want nothing to do with that fight. Yeah, it’s a lose-lose situation because after the fight, they [Team Benavidez] are going to talk about, ‘Because of this.’ I fight with any fighter and I win my good money. I can do whatever I want at this time because I deserve it. I did everything in my career, and I deserve to be in this position. I’m going to do whatever I want,” Canelo said

Benavidez has moved on, as he will box Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Light Heavyweight Interim Title on June 22. A win makes him mandatory for either Dmitry Bivol or Artur Beterbiev, who face off on June 1 for undisputed. However, Canelo may also target the winner.

He faced Bivol at 175 pounds in 2022, losing a one-sided unanimous decision. A rematch broke down over differences in the weight class. Canelo wanted to run things back at 175, while Bivol wanted a shot at Alvarez’s undisputed title at 168. But if the money is right, Canelo could face Bivol for all the belt at 175, if the results go his way.

“There is always the possibility of having a rematch with Dmitri Bivol. Why not? That fight – I would love to have that fight. I’m just focused on this fight [right now with Munguia]. I’m fight by fight. But you know, if there is something interesting for me at 175 pounds, why not?,” Canelo added
