Canelo Eyes Berlanga Or Charlo Next

Canelo Alvarez may fight Edgar Berlanga or Jermall Charlo in September in time for Mexican Independence Day.

Alvarez secured a win over Jaime Munguia in May to keep his undisputed title at 168. There is a growing expectation that Canelo must box David Benavidez. However, Alvarez is demanding $200 million, making that unlikely. The IBF had ordered Canelo to face his mandatory William Scull next.

A deal has been agreed. However, reports indicate it could be a step-aside deal. Scull is not a big name, while a fight with Berlanga is much bigger. He has a massive Puerto Rican fanbase, vital to selling a big PPV. An alternative is Jermall Charlo. He was linked with the Canelo fight before his brother, Jermell Charlo, took it.

Jermall had been absent for over two years from the sport with mental health issues, meaning he was not ready in time. He then faced Jose Benavidez Jr. and beat him in a unanimous decision. But since Canelo beat Jermell so easily, fans may push back against this fight. Those two names have not gone down well as boxing fans hope Canelo chooses a more competitive opponent.
