Canelo-GGG Negotiations On Hold
The negotiations for the Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin rematch have been paused until mid December, following Golden Boy fighter David Lemieux challenges Billy Joe Saunders for his WBO middleweight title.
In an interview with ESPN Deportes, De La Hoya stated that talks will heat up following the break to focus on Lemieux battling in his hometown.
“We will wait [to resume negotiations until] after Lemieux-Saunders. We will talk, analyze things, these negotiations take time and they are not easy. After that fight we will think about it, come together as a team.”
If Lemieux defeats Saunders for the WBO title, it may not only ccreate leverage for Canelo and Golden Boy, but another option for a May 5th clash.
While the Golovkin fight is a bigger fight, it would be an easier negotiation since both Alvarez and Lemieux are under the Golden Boy banner.
And while there is a lot of prognostication, De La Hoya sees the long game for Alvarez.
“He is barely 27 years old, he is young, he has 10 more years in boxing, he is leading a very ambitious career, but that is what it is, to be great you have to fight with the best in the world,.”
