Canelo Honored with Award in Mexico
WBA/WBC Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez was one of several athletes recently honored by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto with a National Sports Award.
Alvarez won the award in the professional branch for his win over previously-undefeated unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in their rematch back in September.
Alvarez is now the first boxer in history to win the highest award a Mexican athlete can receive from the national government.
The middleweight champion commented that he was honored to have been recognized by his country for his accomplishments and promised to continue winning in Mexico’s honor.
Alvarez steps up to super middleweight to challenge WBA (Regular) champion Rocky Fielding on Dec. 15. It will be his first fight at Madison Square Garden.
