Canelo Is Cherry-Picking His Opponents – Says Joe Smith Jr.

Joe Smith Jr. has accused Canelo Alvarez of cherry-picking his opponents.

Canelo may be a four-division world champion, but the Mexican has faced criticism over his choice of opponents of late.

Following his defeat to Dmitry Bivol, Canelo fought a fading Gennady Golovkin and then his mandatory John Ryder.

However, a rematch with Bivol at 168 lbs was ruled out after Canelo made it clear that he wanted the rematch at light heavyweight.

Meanwhile, an all-Mexican clash with David Benavidez never came into fruition, despite the ‘Mexican Monster’s’ team confirming that an offer had been made.

With that being said, Smith made it clear that he wanted Canelo to face Benavidez or Bivol which is the fight that the boxing community would want to see.

“He’s picking his fights, fighting people that he believes he can beat. Yeah, definitely. He fought everybody and is one of the best fighters. I think he should give Bivol his rematch.

“The fight that is being talked about now [Canelo vs. Jermall Charlo] seems like a good fight, but I’d like to see him fight Benavidez.

“I’d like to get back in there. I just want the tough fights. I want to fight Beterbiev or Bivol. Those are the two guys I’m interested in,” Smith Jr.

Nevertheless, following Canelo’s three-fight deal with the PBC, Bivol may be out of the question.

However, given that Benavidez is aligned with the PBC, there is a possibility that a mega-Mexican clash on Cinco de Mayo weekend or Mexican Independence Day may occur.
