Canelo-Kovalev Weight Set, Announcement Near

Canelo Alvarez will indeed be moving on up to 175, as he tries to get a bigger piece of the pie against Sergey Kovalev.

As reported earlier this week, Alvarez and Kovalev are near a deal to fight on November 2nd, with Kovalev’s WBO light heavyweight championship.

The two sides were near a deal earlier this year, but Kovalev decided to stick to his contractually obligated title defense against Anthony Yarde, who he defeated in the 11th round of their August 24th fight in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported on Wednesday that an official announcement for Alvarez’s debut at 175-pounds will be in the next few days, with the fight airing on DAZN.

While DAZN head John Skipper preferred Alvarez stay at 160 or 165-pounds for a trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin, he did have Kovalev on a list of acceptable opponents for the unified middleweight champion, who signed an eight-figure deal with DAZN in 2018.
