Canelo May Fight In Mexico In 2019

While WBC, IBF, and WBA middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez has made Las Vegas his home away from home for the past few years, rarely fighting outside of Sin City.

Now, it seems that for the first time in eight years, Alvarez may step into the ring inside his native Mexico.

Alvarez, who is set to fight again in September on Mexican independence day weekend is “hopeful” to fight in Mexico this year.

And while his trainer Eddy Reynoso is down for Alvarez returning there this Fall, but potential arenas have been rejected due to Alvarez being sponsored by Tecate.

“It’s an open option, that all depends on the situation, how Canelo feels, if he wants to fight in Mexico, if he wants to be in his land, but you also have to see which opponent wants to go to Mexico, which world champion wants to go to Mexico and wants fighting in front of [a packed venue of] Mexicans. We are going to see what happens,” said De La Hoya in a recent interview.

On whether or not Canelo wants to fight again at super middleweight or even at light heavyweight.

“That depends, why not [fight next at] 175, I think Canelo has always been ambitious and wants to fight with the best, so let’s sit down and analyze the situation,” De La Hoya said.
