Canelo: Odds Are Against Mikey In Spence Fight
With Tuesday’s announcement making it official, a much talked about showdown between Mikey Garcia and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. was made official for March 16th in Dallas.
Many in boxing have pondered why Garcia would move up two weight classes to face the fellow undefeated champion, one of which is Canelo Alvarez.
Alvarez told ESPN Deportes this week that the difference in weight will make the difference.
“I think that the two of them are good fighters, but Mikey has little experience fighting at welterweight. I do not know if it’s the first [fight for him at 147], but that could be the difference,” Canelo told ESPN Deportes.
“Being left-handed and being at 147 for a long time will be an advantage (for Spence). It will be a good fight, and my support, as always, is with the Mexican.”
Spence and Garcia headline a slate of fights set for early 2019 from Premier Boxing Champions and FOX, who signed a long-term partnership earlier this year.
