Canelo On Chavez: Once a Quitter, Always a Quitter

When asked why Canelo Alvarez was moving up to 164.5 lbs. for a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. rather than just stick to middleweight, Oscar De La Hoya made it simple: Canelo hates Chavez. Whether that’s fully true or just promotional talk, Canelo has launched a substantial war of words against his next opponent already.

Talking on a conference call to promote the upcoming fight between the two Mexican stars, Canelo was asked if he believes he can make Chavez quit in the ring rather than just knock him out. Chavez had quit before against Andrzej Fonfara, and Chavez’s father even quit against Canelo’s promoter De La Hoya.

“Everything’s possible in boxing,” Canelo said through a translator. “And as the great Bernard Hopkins once said, once a quitter, always a quitter. So anything’s possible.”

Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) has yet to fight at the true middleweight limit of 160 lbs., instead competing at catchweights of 155 lbs. and then moving down to the 154 lb. division and winning a title there. This year Canelo plans on becoming a true middleweight, but the Chavez fight is a strange detour all the way up to 164.5 lbs against the biggest fighter Canelo will have fought yet.

Because of the factor that size will play in the fight, many are giving Chavez more of a chance than the odds suggest. One thing that is all but guaranteed is that the fight is going to be an entertaining slugfest, with both boxers entering the ring with exciting, aggressive styles and knockout power. Canelo himself agrees with the sentiment that the fight is unlikely to go the distance.

“There’s a very high percentage that this fight could end by knockout because of our styles, because of the weight, because of the size of each other,” Alvarez said. “And, you know, obviously a knockout is spectacular for the fighters, for the fans. We’ll see what’s gonna happen come the fight. And we’re gonna give it a hundred percent to do everything possible to give the fans what they want.”
