Canelo To De La Hoya: You Have No Loyalty
Over the past few months, rumors have grown that there is a rift between Canelo Alvarez and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
Those rumors were confirmed by Alvarez in an interview with Michael Coppinger of the Athletic, who took the Golden Boy Promotions CEO to task for how he does business.
“You can see there’s no loyalty in him,” Canelo said.
“He changed trainers during his career. He changed managers in his career. So there’s no loyalty. That’s the way he is. We see it now.”
Alvarez is incensed at De La Hoya, not only for the issues surrounding a failed negotiation with mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko earlier this year, but a comment De La Hoya made on boxer Ryan Garcia’s Instagram.
De La Hoya is said to have written in a now-deleted comment: “Bro, when you duck under, always keep your eye on your opponent. You tell your trainer that.”
Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso also trains Garcia.
“The only thing I have to say, very ungrateful,” Canelo said. “He has to remember that his first world champ in the Golden Boy stable was Oscar Larios [the longtime assistant trainer to Reynoso].
“I’m a very loyal person and we are a very loyal team. We’re still together. But you can see there’s no loyalty in Oscar.”
