Alvarez is the current Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion after defending his title against Jermell Charlo. His current three-fight deal with PBC has two bouts left, with David Benavidez being linked as a possible opponent. The Mexican Monster has been the WBC Interim Champion for over a year. Cinco De Mayo Weekend and Mexican Independence Day have been mentioned as dates for a fight. But the WBC has not ordered the mandatory so far, leaving fans waiting longer to see the fight.
Jermall Charlo could now become the beneficiary. He recently returned from over two years away from the sport, with mental health struggles, beating Jose Benavidez Jr. in a unanimous decision. He was on course to face Canelo before the Benavidez fight, only for his brother Jermell to get the go-ahead. But since Jermall is a middleweight, the fight is unlikely to push Canelo like a fully-fledged 168-pounder would. But a summer fight with Benavidez could follow if Alvarez does come through a potential Charlo fight.
“That source said Jermall Charlo remained a frontrunner to box Canelo on May 4. The third Canelo fight on the PBC swing would likely, still, be against David Benavidez, which, the source added, could well involve a rematch clause, meaning that, if Canelo lost and activated that clause, the three-fight swing would turn into an effective four-fight deal,” ProBox TV
