Boxing has recently been trying to get rid of frivolous belts, however, it seems like the WBC is now going in the opposite direction by creating yet another belt, a “Puebla Belt”, which will be given to the winner of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo fight.
The WBC has a history of doing such things, having first begun the creation of special belts in 2013. Since then, the governing body has made a total of 28 belts to mark some of the biggest fights. And this bout on September 30th, 2023, does promise much. Canelo will defend his undisputed super middleweight titles against Charlo, who jumps up two weight classes. The fight is also significant since it marks the first fight of Canelo’s three-fight deal with the PBC. In contrast, Charlo can make history by following Terence Crawford by becoming undisputed in a second division. With that being said, here is what the WBC had to say about the belt.
The WBC Presents Puebla Belt
Commemorative belt to be presented to the winner of #CaneloCharlo

“For the development of the belt, two of the most important craft techniques in the State of Puebla were used, talavera and embroidery. The embroidery was done by Matilde Juárez, a craftswoman and artist from Puebla who shows through embroidery and applied colors the most representative patterns of different locations in the state of Puebla,” the WBC explained in a statement.
“The talavera frames the belt plate with a traditional, exquisite and ornate Puebla design. The feathering, which is representative of Puebla, in this edition, was done and wonderfully accomplished in black, with the intention of depicting and highlighting an ancient design, managing to transmit and preserve and glorify the Puebla tradition. Significantly, the Cathedral of Puebla, which is one of the most representative monuments in this beautiful State, is prominently portrayed, supported by two soaring angels, who are a focal point plus part of the history of Angelopolis,” WBC stated
Despite this being the case, boxing fans lamented the creation of further belts at a time when boxing is inundated with them.
