Canelo vs. Scull Purse Bids Postponed

The purse bids for Canelo Alvarez’s IBF Super Middleweight Title defense against his mandatory William Scull have been postponed until June 13.

The purse bids were initially meant for June 6. Alvarez defended his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title, beating Jaime Munguia by a unanimous decision in his last fight. He is facing increasing pressure to fight David Benavidez. Alvarez has demanded $200 million for the fight, which appears unrealistic. A fight with Scull will be difficult to sell since he is not a big name.

But if Canelo wants the big purses, he may have to face Scull as it keeps his undisputed status alive. That will be vital for securing fights with Benavidez and Terence Crawford, who would only be interested in fighting for all the belts. But by facing Scull, Canelo will have to accept a smaller purse. Dan Rafael recently confirmed Canelo was on vacation in Italy, with no decision made over whether to vacate. An alternative is to offer Scull step-aside money in favor of a big fight against Benavidez or Crawford.
