Canelo Wants $150-200 Million To Fight Benavidez

Canelo Alvarez is willing to fight David Benavidez for $150-200 million.

Alvarez made the comments to the media following his kick-off presser with Jaime Munguia. Alvarez will defend his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title against the undefeated Munguia, who has 34 KOs in his 43 wins, on May 4. But the perception is that Canelo is ducking Benavidez.

The Mexican Monster is the WBC Super Middleweight Interim Champion, a position he has been in for approximately two years. Both sides have blamed each other for the fight not happening. Benavidez’s father claimed they agreed to take $5 million to fight Canelo.

The boxer’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, also said Canelo rejected a $55 million guarantee. Canelo and his trainer, Eddie Reynoso, denied that any official offers had been made. But Canelo is willing to fight for a huge purse.

“If a promoter comes to me and offers me 150 or 200 million, I fight tomorrow. If that’s on the table, I’ll fight him tomorrow. That’s the reason I fight with him because the only thing he brings to the table is 25 [million] more,” Canelo said

Canelo may be following Floyd Mayweather’s playbook. Mayweather had been accused of ducking Manny Pacquiao before taking the fight in 2015. The delay increased the anticipation for the fight, earning Mayweather over $300 million for it. The Saudis are the only people in boxing who could put up a huge sum. They reportedly gave Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua close to $50 million each for facing Francis Ngannou.

But Canelo’s comments could also be used to price himself out of the fight, thus avoiding Benavidez. The Mexican Monster has said he will not leave PBC to make the Canelo fight. But to make the fight in Saudi Arabia, PBC would have to work with another network. DAZN has been the global broadcaster for the Saudi fights, requiring a possible deal with them. But given the demand to see Canelo vs. Benavidez, Saudi Arabia may put up the money.
