Canelo Will Face Munguia On Cinco de Mayo

Canelo Alvarez will defend his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title against Jaime Munguia on May 4 during Cinco de Mayo Weekend.

According to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, the fight has been confirmed subject to an official announcement which will take place next week. It is unclear if Canelo’s fight will take place with PBC on Amazon Prime or if it will happen on DAZN.

Alvarez has not fought since beating Jermell Charlo last year. With two fights left under his PBC deal, he decided to part ways. However, reports indicated that PBC was willing to make another attempt to tie Canelo down with a Munguia fight. The news means Canelo will not face David Benavidez anytime soon.

But Munguia is a credible opponent, given his record. The Mexican is 43-0, with 34 knockouts. He is coming off a ninth-round stoppage win against John Ryder as he seeks to win all the belts at 168. The news has received a mixed response, with some questioning Canelo’s previous comments about fighting an American next.
