Canelo’s Next Fight Options Don’t Include Benavidez

Canelo Alvarez has reportedly drawn up a three-man list for his next fight in May.

The current expectation is for Alvarez to face David Benavidez following their respective victories. Canelo beat Jermell Charlo after the latter moved up two weight divisions from junior middleweight to take on the Mexican. Alvarez eased his way to a unanimous decision win. Meanwhile, Benavidez put in a commanding performance to stop Demetrius Andrade after the sixth round. Canelo was expected to fight Benavidez on either Cinco de Mayo weekend or Mexican Independence Day.

However, it appears that Alvarez has three other options: Terence Crawford, Jermell Charlo and Jaime MunguiaCrawford had indicated his wish to move up three weight classes to fight for Canelo’s undisputed title. A victory for Bud would make him undisputed in a third weight class. However, given the weight difference, Canelo did distance himself from the fight because he would get no credit for a victory.

In addition, a bout with Jermall Charlo had been teased before Alvarez’s fight with his brother Jermell. Jermall could not make the date since he was making a comeback after more than two years out of the sport with mental health issues. Following his return and win over Jose Benavidez Jr, he may prove to be an option.

Lastly, a fight with an undefeated Mexican, Jaime Munguia, is an option. Mungia has two fights at 168, which were wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Gonzalo Gaston Coria. Reports indicate that Munguia has agreed on a deal to fight Canelo’s former opponent, John Ryder, after which he could fight Canelo. Despite those options, boxing fans demanded the fight with Benavidez.
