Carlos Newton Becomes First Canadian Champion In UFC – May 4, 2001 (This Day In MMA History)
Twenty-one years ago today, Carlos Newton made UFC history.
Newton became the first Canadian champion in the promotion when he finished Pat Miletich with a bulldog choke in the welterweight championship.
It was, however, short lived after he lost in November of that year to Matt Hughes.
Still, Newton is considered an MMA pioneer in Canada. He is also one of the few MMA athletes to ever be allowed to compete in the UFC and Pride FC at the same time.
He competed in welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight.
