Carlos Prates Dismantles Jack Della Maddalena At UFC Fight Night Perth
Carlos Prates added a second consecutive victory over a former welterweight champion at UFC Fight Night Perth with his dominant third-round stoppage of Jack Della Maddalena in the main event.
Through the opening round, Prates delivered some precise and powerful leg kicks to his opponent, which clearly had an effect on the Aussie as things progressed. But JDM powered through the early onslaught and managed to secure a takedown near the end of the opening frame.
In the second, Prates came out more aggressive, delivering strikes from all angles and hurting Della Maddalena on several occasions. JDM went on to secure one takedown in the round, but could not keep the pressure on, and the Brazilian was back on his feet and throwing strikes in no time. By the end of the round, Della Maddalena was visibly shaken from the volume of punches, elbows and knees he absorbed, and had a heavy limp from the damaging low kicks.
The third round brought on more of the same type of action, with Prates eventually dropping his opponent with leg kicks. From there, the Brazilian took the top position over the highly compromised Australian and finished the match with downward elbows.
Last November, Prates defeated former 170-pound champion Leon Edwards by knockout in the second round. Now with another dominant showing over a different former champion in Della Maddalena, Prates feels he is deserving of a shot at the belt the next time he fights.
