Carvalho Focused On Winning Bellator Gold
Bellator 241 was meant to feature Team Pitbull v. SBG Ireland. The main event inside the Mohegan Sun Casino had Patricio Freire defending his Featherweight Title against Pedro Carvalho in the quarter-finals of the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix. Now, Carvalho will have to wait for his chance at glory.
Mere hours before Bellator 241 took place, the event was postponed as a result of the coronavirus. This was after Bellator did everything they could to keep the show going. Missing out on one of the biggest opportunities of his young career, Carvalho (11-3) is looking past the situation and into the future.
“I’m not frustrated at all,” Carvalho stated to MMA Junkie. “Of course, when I found out that the fight was canceled it was rough. But I’m not frustrated. I will become world champion. It doesn’t matter if it’s March 13 or if it will be end of this year. It doesn’t matter. I will become world champion, so I’m OK with it.”
Carvalho is on a six-fight win streak dating back to 2017. Making his pro debut for 2012, Carvalho made his Bellator debut in 2018, beating Daniel Crawford at Bellator 200 via split decision. Since then he has submitted Luca Vitali and beat Derek Campos via TKO. His last bout was a submission win in September over Sam Sicilia at Bellator 226.
MMA fighters are known for their extreme preparation prior to upcoming bouts. Although gyms are closed all over, including his home of Portugal, Carvalho is still working like his fight could be at any moment.
“I’m still in camp,” Carvalho went on to say. “So I’m still training everyday. Of course the gyms are closed, I don’t have teammates around me so I have to do things by myself, but I’m staying active. I’m keeping myself on weight – I could make weight if the fight was next weekend or something.”
It should be noted that Bellator’s Scott Coker stated that Bellator events could resume sometime in the summer if health and safety guidelines are in place.
Do you think Carvalho can beat Freire if given the opportunity?
