Cejudo Stops Dillashaw In First Minute To Retain UFC Title

What could have been a historic evening for TJ Dillashaw turned into a nightmare as Henry Cejudo decimated him in less than 40 seconds in their UFC flyweight title bout.

In the main event of UFC’s first card on an ESPN platform, Cejudo showcased the world that he truly belongs in the pound-for-pound elite with a first-round TKO win over Dillashaw. Cejudo pushed Dillashaw down, then landed a right hand to drop him. Cejudo was able to connect with a series of big strikes, forcing the referee to step in and put an end to the contest. Clocking in at 32 seconds, it was the fifth fastest stoppage in UFC history.

Dillashaw, the UFC’s bantamweight champion, moved down in weight to attempt to become just the fourth person in UFC history to hold titles in multiple weight classes at the same time. Instead, Cejudo played spoiler and has now defeated both Dillashaw and long-time champion Demetrious Johnson in his last two title bouts.

But the main event wasn’t the only noteworthy event to take place at the Barclays Center. The co-main event featured the UFC debut of former NFL star Greg Hardy, but it did not go well for him. His match against Allen Crowder ended in a disqualification after Hardy threw an illegal knee to Crowder in the second round. Hardy was given the loss, his first as a professional MMA fighter.

Also on the card, Paige VanZant had no problem shaking off the ring rust in her first fight since January 2018. VanZant had a scrappy bout against Rachael Ostovich and ultimately submitted her with an armbar early in the second round, picking up her first victory since 2016.

Dennis Bermudez called it a career in style as he dominated Te Edwards en route to a shutout unanimous decision victory, snapping a four-fight win streak and getting his first victory since 2016. After the fight, Bermudez announced his retirement from MMA, putting an end to a pro career that started in 2009.

On the undercard, Donald Cerrone scored an impressive and dominant victory over Alexander Hernandez. Cerrone started the fight by hurting Hernandez to the point where he had blood running down on his face in the first round. Cerrone continued to dominate in the second round and took down Hernandez with a big kick to the side of his head. After some ground-and-pound from Cerrone, the referee had no choice but to step in and stop the fight, awarding Cerrone the victory.

The win attracted the attention of one Conor McGregor, who said he’d be interested in a fight against Cerrone. After the fight, Cerrone responded by saying he would love to fight McGregor someday.

Joanne Calderwood proved that she can hang in the flyweight division and after winning her second straight fight since moving back down to flyweight, Calderwood believes she run the division. Calderwood defeated Ariane Lipski by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27) and said after the fight that she would be ready to fight in the octagon as soon as March.
