Chael Sonnen: Masvidal Will Only Make A UFC Return To Face Gaethje For The BMF Belt

Chael Sonnen can only see Jorge Masvidal making a UFC return to face Justin Gaethje

‘Gamebread’ recently announced he was coming out of retirement with speculation that he could return at UFC 300. Jake Paul then leaked Masvidal’s potential opponent, saying he was facing Nate Diaz before removing the social media post.

Masvidal has not addressed those rumors, but Ben Askren was open to fighting Masvidal in a rematch. Their only fight occurred at UFC 239 when Masvidal landed a knee to the head to secure the fastest UFC knockout.

Sonnen felt Masvidal only had eyes for Gaethje since he is the BMF title holder. Gaethje knocked out Dustin Poirier in the second round at UFC 291 to win the belt. Masvidal first captured the symbolic title with a doctor stoppage win against Nate Diaz at UFC 244. That is the only fight Sonnen saw as making sense.

“The only way you could make up for his retirement or that you could make up for the discrepancy within records is if you spot him the weight and you move Gaethje to 170 and you make it for a ‘BMF. I know Masvidal is not going to fight in the UFC ever again, and that it is not his choice unless it’s at 300 for the belt against Gaethje,” Sonnen

There are still slots left on the UFC 300 card, making it possible for a Masvidal-Gaethje title fight to happen. Based on the social media response, there was not an appetite to see it.
