Chael Sonnen Sounds Off On Jon Jones Retirement Situation – “What Good Is Your Word?”
Chael Sonnen has given his candid take on Jon Jones flip-flopping between embracing retirement and making a UFC return this past weekend, and he feels the former two-division UFC champion’s word can no longer be trusted.
Last week, Jon Jones reiterated his retirement plans, stating that he is focusing on the business aspect of his career, not fighting. This, of course, followed ‘Bones’ calling for his release from the promotion in March, prompted by his feud over not getting to fight on the White House card scheduled for this summer, so there were no surprises in this announcement. Later last week, Jones revealed during the broadcast of a DBX fight card that he is not committed to a full retirement from fighting, and had a call with UFC matchmaker Hunter Campbell earlier that day.

Sonnen and Jones met in the octagon in 2013, and ever since the build-up to their fight the pair have not agreed on much. Jones defeated Sonnen by TKO in the first round of their headlining contest at UFC 159, claiming his fifth consecutive light heavyweight title defense in the process.
In a recent post to social media, Sonnen shared his take on Jones’ retirement situation, and did not hold back in his analysis of the warrant to not believe what Jones has to say at this point.

“Jon Jones publicly retired on Friday, which is enough, per the rules, to have yourself removed from the testing pool. Jon Jones, on Saturday, came back and said he is not officially retired, which, per the rules, is enough to reinsert yourself into the testing pool,” Sonnen said of Jones.
“Now, no, none of that stuff is happening, and it’s all very silly, but there is a question: if you’re the baddest dude in the world and you’re going to be the world champion, you’ve got to be a man. And nobody’s going to mistake you for a man, let alone the man, if they can’t trust you.
“When you put out a statement on Friday and the exact opposite statement on Saturday, there is a simple question, and it’s not whether you’re retired or not or if you’re going to fight again,” Sonnen continued on Jones. “It’s simply, what good is your word?”
