Chandler Teases A Fight With Makhachev

Michael Chandler says he has a fight with UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev on the table.

Chandler’s June 29 fight against Conor McGregor at UFC 303 was called off after The Notorious suffered a broken toe. Chandler has been waiting for the McGregor fight since their days as rival coaches on the TUF 31 series. So much so that Chandler has not fought since 2022, when he lost to Dustin Poirier. The inactivity could harm him now that he is 38.

The Islam fight offers Chandler a title shot. A win makes any fight with McGregor much bigger since he would have more leverage. However, a loss means less demand for McGregor-Chandler. Other fights against Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway are also possible. But for now, Islam appears to be the leading name.

Despite this, Chandler is still hopeful of fighting McGregor. The Irishman hopes to return by September, although Dana White has refused to make that fight happen this year. Nevertheless, talks are underway for a new date.
