Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje Will Meet In Title Fight At UFC 274
Charles Oliveira will make his next title defense.
UFC lightweight champion Oliveira (32-8) will defend his title for the second time. He earned the vacant title against Michael Chandler, defended it against Dustin Poirier, and now it’s former interim champion and undisputed title challenger Justin Gaethje’s turn.
Gaethje (23-3) earned five victories in his last six battles. He defeated James Vick, Edson Barboza, Donald Cerrone via KO and earned the interim title fight ticket. He defeated Tony Ferguson via TKO in the last fifth round, earned the interim belt, and faced Khabib Nurmagomedov.
In the fight with Nurmagomedov, he had his moments, but he suffered a loss via submission triangle choke in the second round.
After being defeated by Nurmagomedov, he fought once against, Michael Chandler. They held a three-round battle, but in the final round, Gaethje was way better and earned a unanimous decision victory.
Oliveira is credited as a phenomenal submission artist.
Because of his excellent grappling abilities, people often underestimate his striking. However, he has Muay Thai skills, which he showed when he defeated Chandler, Jared Gordon, Nik Lentz and others via knockout.
For this moment, Oliveira is on a 10-fight winning streak. Before earning the title, he dominated against Ferguson and defeated Kevin Lee via submission.
Oliveira and Gaethje will share the octagon at UFC 274 on May 7 in Phoenix, Arizona.
