Charles Oliveira’s Interest In Serving As Backup For McGregor Vs. Chandler

On June 29th at UFC 303 Conor McGregor is poised to make his long awaited comeback, in a match with Michael Chandler, and Charles Oliveira would like to stand on deck should either of them need to drop out of the fight.

Oliveira is most recently coming off a decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan last month at UFC 300, but it seems he does not want to waste any time, and is ready to bounce back.

UFC 303 will go down live in Las Vegas next month, in what will surely be a sold out crowd inside the T-Mobile Arena to witness the return of “The Notorious” McGregor.

“Stop talking about 170 and Conor McGregor,” Oliveira said in a UFC 301 media scrum (h/t MMA Fighting). “I offered myself to be the alternate for that fight, and obviously, I’m down for that. I’d make some money if I don’t fight and if I do fight then awesome. The only condition is if I were to fight McGregor then I’d have to re-negotiate that [contract] for it.

“Once I said that, everyone started talking about me and moving to 170, but that’s not exactly what it is,” he concluded.

Oliveira as the backup for McGregor-Chandler is an interesting concept in itself, but when you factor in past history, it becomes even more interesting. Back in 2021, Oliveira defeated Chandler at UFC 262 to achieve the championship title in the 155-pound division.

Given his past victory over Chandler, Oliveira certainly feels he can hang with the competition, now we will wait and see if the UFC will comply with his request.
