Chocolatito-Cuadras II Set for March
One of the best fights of 2016 is going to be run back early next year. Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras will rematch in March. The fight was announced by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman at the ongoing WBC convention.
The announcement was reported by Lance Pugmire of the LA Times.
Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KOs) is regarded by many to be the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. When he faced Cuadras in September for the super flyweight title, he met the stiffest test of his career to this point. Cuadras (35-1-1, 27 KOs) put as much of a beating on Gonzalez as he received in the 12-round bout. Each fighter was cut in the bout and continued to connect with heavy shots on the other.
Gonzalez won that bout by unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112, 117-111) but the exciting back-and-forth battle left boxing fans clamoring for a rematch.
After the first fight, Cuadras and Gonzalez both expressed interest in an immediate rematch.
"You took my baby away from me, ‘Chocolatito,’" Cuadras said in September, per BoxingScene. "I have a huge thorn on my side and if we both want the rematch, let’s do it.
"We both want it. I now know very well how he boxes. In our rematch, I can fight toe-to-toe and knock him out, so we don’t have to go to the cards."
