Chocolatito to Fight Rungvisai at MSG

Top pound-for-pound fighter Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez will be back in the ring in March, as he will make his first title defense of his junior bantamweight belt against mandatory challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. The fight will serve as the co-main event to Gennady Golovkin vs. Danny Jacobs on March 18 at Madison Square Garden.

ESPN’s Dan Rafael broke the news of the fight, which is expected to be announced at today’s kickoff press conference in New York.

Gonzalez (46-0) moved up the the junior bantamweight division in September, defeating Carlos Cuadras in one of the best fights of 2016.

Given the close nature of Chocolatito vs Cuadras, a rematch between the two was expected for March. The negotiations stalled however, leading to Gonzalez being matched up with WBC mandatory challenger Sor Rungvisai.

Rungvisai (40-4-1) is a Thai boxer and former WBC junior bantamweight titleholder.
