Chris Eubank Jr. Has His Eyes On A Top Middleweight Fighter

Not that long ago, Chris Eubank Jr. set his sights on the heavy-hitters of the middleweight division. The interim WBA Middleweight Champion is looking to double-down on his callouts, especially against the main WBA champion.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Eubank (29-2) discussed the possibility of facing WBA (Super) Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez. Canelo (53-1-2) won the title when he beat Gennadiy Golovkin in 2018. He has since moved up in weight twice; winning super-middleweight and light-heavyweight gold. Eubank is still interested in taking on the 29-year-old.

“Canelo Alvarez, that’s the No 1 fight that I want right now,” Eubank Jr. stated. “I don’t think anyone on the planet would make a better opponent for him. Most guys are going in there to run and survive, I’m going in there to destroy.

“I know I can beat him, so that’s the fight I want. I definitely have got a strategy. I see the weaknesses. I see where he can be exposed. I’m not looking to survive, I’m taking the fight to him and I don’t think he’s ready for somebody like that.”

Eubank is currently on a three-fight win streak. Following a loss against George Groves in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series Middleweight tournament, he rebounded with a win over JJ McDonagh. His last fight was a TKO-win over Matt Korobov back in December for the vacant interim title.

Training with Roy Jones Jr. in Florida, Eubank has also expressed an interest in facing WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders. Suffering the first loss of his career against Saunders in 2014 for the European, British and Commonwealth Middleweight Titles, Eubanks wouldn’t mind getting a measure of revenge. A few issues are preventing the fight from happening, however.

“Everybody knows we don’t get along. We don’t like each other,” Eubank went on to say regarding Saunders. “I want the fight. The only issue is that I’m at middleweight and he’s at super-middleweight. I’m with Premier Boxing Champions so it’s most likely that I will fight in the States.”

Saunders still does not have a license after having it suspended following controversial comments by him.

Eubank is ready to go “full steam ahead” when it comes to a Canelo bout. Currently, Canelo’s team is interested in Golovkin, although they are ready to explore all options.
