Chris Eubank Jr.: I Know I Can Beat Gennady Golovkin
Chris Eubank Jr. believes he has what it takes to defeat Gennady Golovkin.
Eubank has been clamoring for bigger fights since becoming the interim WBA Middleweight Champion. Eubank has called for a rematch with current WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders and a bout with WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight titleholder Canelo Alvarez.
Speaking to Boxing Social, Eubank said that he feels he can become just the second man to defeat “GGG” (via BoxingScene.com).
“Gennady Golovkin is at the top for the simple fact that I’ve been trying to get that fight for years. I know I can beat him. The fight was pretty much made a few years back and it slipped through my fingers. It’s always bothered me, it’s always been a regret of mine. I wouldn’t want to finish my career not having fought him. And he has a middleweight world title. Simple. On top of all that.”
Golovkin is coming off a record-setting title defense. He successfully defended his IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles after stopping Kamil Szeremeta. Golovkin broke Bernard Hopkins’ record for most successful title defenses in middleweight history at 21.
Eubank hasn’t competed since December 7, 2019. He defeated Matt Korobov via second-round TKO due to injury. It was this victory that earned him the interim WBA Middleweight Title.
Ryota Murata was recently promoted from the “Regular” WBA Middleweight Champion to the “Super” titleholder. Eubank has a chance to unify the WBA gold with a showdown against Murata. Eubank has said he’s open to the matchup.
