Chris Weidman To Reportedly Face Omari Akhmedov In Middleweight Return

After a delay, Chris Weidman will finally look to make his return to middleweight for the first time since 2018. According to TASS and confirmed by MMA Junkie, Weidman will face off against Omari Akhmedov. The fight will reportedly take place on August 8.

Weidman (14-5) is looking to get his first win since 2017. The former UFC Middleweight Champion lost the title to Luke Rockhold at UFC 194 in 2015. Since then, injuries and losses have derailed his career. 1-4 since then, “All-American” is on a two-fight losing streak. He made his light-heavyweight debut in October, losing to contender Dominick Reyes via first-round knockout.

The 36-year-old was supposed to face middleweight Jack Hermansson at UFC Oklahoma City on May 2, but the bout was pulled due to the coronavirus.

Akhmedov (20-4-1) has been with the UFC since 2013. The 32-year-old fought three times in 2019 after a draw against Marvin Vettori in 2017. He won all three of those bouts, besting Tim Boetsch, Zak Cummings, and Ian Heinisch via unanimous decision. The Russian is ranked eleventh in the UFC’s bantamweight rankings.

There is no set location for the August 8 event, but Las Vegas and “Fight island” are possibilities. The scheduled main event for the card is Derrick Lewis v. Alexey Oleinik in a heavyweight bout.
