Claressa Shields Announces Her Return To Boxing At Heavyweight

Claressa Shields will box Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse for the WBC Heavyweight Title on July 27 from Detroit.

Shields will jump up two weight classes, unlike the men’s division, from 160. Shields became the Undisputed Middleweight Champion with a win over Savannah Marshall in 2022. That made her undisputed in two weight classes following her feat at 154. She defended the belts against Maricela Cornejo, beating her via a unanimous decision in her last fight.

Since then, Shields has signed a deal with the PFL before making her debut on the PFL vs. Bellator Champs card. She defeated Kelsey De Santis. Now, Shields is making a big step up. Vidal’s record is 7-1, with two wins by knockout. She has won five on the bounce since losing against Alejandra Jimenez in 2017. It is very difficult to see Shields return to 160 after this fight. A move to light heavyweight is more likely, depending on the result.
