Claressa Shields Braces For Second MMA Showdown On Wednesday

Boxing ace Claressa Shields is poised to prove on Wednesday that her KO win in her debut MMA fight was not a fluke.

She will lock horns against Abigail Montes in her second PFL showdown at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida at 8 p.m. ET.

In a press conference held on Monday, Shield seemed confident ahead of the fight, but did not underestimate how tough the fight may be against Montes.

“I am 1-0 in MMA. I’m not 12-0. She has the experience,” Shields said. “She has a kickboxing background. I watched her fight and she takes girls down. She’s a ground and pound girl. She throws kicks. She throws punches and combinations and stuff. I have to be very alert for this fight.”

“It is a different kind of fight. I am going for a very competitive fight and she is going to know she was in a fight.”

The two-time gold medalist trains with MMA veterans Holly Holm and Cris Cyborg and this, she believes, has made her better at the sport.

Despite spending most of her life honing her boxing skills, Shields said she “felt a part of MMA” when she made her debut against Brittney Elkin.

“I am looking forward to showing the world that I am putting a lot of work in and I am better at Jiu-Jitsu and better at wrestling and betting better at being a mixed martial artist overall,” she continued.
