Claressa Shields Says Male Fighter Knocked Her Out In Sparring With Tampered Gloves

Claressa Shields has accused a male boxer of tampering with his gloves after sharing a sparring session.

The undisputed super middleweight champion reacted after Arturs Ahmetovs leaked a clip showing them sparring in 2018. The footage shows Shields being dropped and in clear pain. The champion alleged Ahmetovs and Derik Santos, his coach, used gloves with no padding. This was after a prior sparring session in which Shields had apparently gotten the better of him. Now Shields has set the record straight.

“I have no problem getting caught in sparring. It happens. I spar the majority of Men! But this dude Arthur and his coach Derrick Santos were embarrassed [when we sparred earlier in the week]. The next time we sparred, he purposely wore gloves with no little to no padding. I can’t make this up. I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve never been KO’d in seventeen years, and I’ve been dropped twice [by Ahmetovs] all in a week of each other. I have no shame in that. But for a male fighter to literally take the padding out his gloves, he’s a punk. Him and coach Derik Santos are bad for the sport,” Shields said

Ahmetov’s team have yet to respond to this, but since the incident occurred five years ago, there are question marks over why it has been released. There is also a boxing convention that what happens in sparring stays behind closed doors. Sparring also has to be taken with a pinch of salt since it does not provide a full picture of a performance. What happens on fight night is the most important thing.
