Claressa Shields Teases Move to MMA

Claressa Shields has teased about facing an MMA fighter, particularly Amanda Nunes, before, but a social media post from her on October 26 made it seem she wants to change sports sooner than later.

After posting the tweet claiming she’s looking at leaving boxing for MMA, Shields told Bad Left Hook the reasoning was due to more money and respect female fighters.

This is not the first time this year Shields has tested possibly moving into the realm of MMA, making claims she could stand toe-to-toe with two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes in the Octagon. If it were in a boxing ring, Shields claims she’d knock Nunes out.

Nunes vs. Shields In The Octagon?

Shields would not be the first female boxer to try her hand at MMA. Holly Holm made history by scoring championships in both sports after she knocked out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 to claim the UFC women’s bantamweight championship. Heather Hardy went 2-2 in Bellator in her professional MMA run, while Amanda Serrano is 1-0-1 in her two MMA bouts thus far.

Hours after sending the initial tweet, Shields said she would not be jumping to the sport right away and still has boxing fights to focus on.

Shields was scheduled to face Ivana Habazin in a junior middleweight title fight before the fight was canceled by an attack on Habazin’s trainer at the weigh-ins, allegedly done by her bother.

As far as what her adviser, Mark Taffett, feels on Shields partaking in MMA, he feels that Shields has the ability to succeed in MMA and put her name up there with some of sports’ best dual-athlete superstars.

“Claressa is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete who is constantly in search of the biggest challenges out there,” Taffet said. “She does not know any limits. That fearlessness is what makes her great and will allow her to climb any mountain as she chooses. She’s not only capable of being a two-sport athlete, she is capable of being champion simultaneously in both. Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson did it. Why not Claressa Shields?”
