In the highly anticipated showdown between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title, Daniel Cormier, a seasoned veteran who has faced both fighters, is undeniably the most qualified expert to weigh in on the impending battle.
While Miocic has been absent from the octagon since his championship loss to Francis Ngannou in 2021, Jones made a resounding debut in the heavyweight division by defeating Ciryl Gane to claim the vacant crown. Jones then wasted no time in calling out Miocic.
According to Cormier, the outcome of the fight could be determined early on, as Miocic’s nearly three-year hiatus from competition may pose a challenge.
“We will know from the very start of the fight whether or not we are seeing the Stipe Miocic from before or if we’re seeing a slowed-down version of the former champion. We’ll know that very quick.”
Cormier also acknowledged that Jones, despite his undeniable skill, has experienced a slight decrease in speed since moving up to the heavyweight division.
He pointed out: “No one could watch that fight with Ciryl and think any different. He even admits it — he goes ‘I gained 30 pounds, of course I’m going to be slower.’ But if Miocic is fast, that could give Jones problems.”
Drawing from his personal experiences in the cage with both fighters, Cormier praised Miocic for his deceptive speed and emphasized its potential impact on the fight.
He shared: “You’ll be fighting Stipe, he’ll throw something and he’ll land, and you’re like, how did he get to me? He is fast, and if he’s still fast, he can get the job done.”
In terms of Jones’ weight, Cormier suggested that a slight reduction may benefit him, as excessive mass could compromise his agility.
“I think even at 227 [pounds], he would be OK at heavyweight. Because then he would maintain that speed that he had, which I think would give a lot of the heavyweights problems.”
Cormier’s insights are informed by his firsthand knowledge of Jones’ unbeatable record throughout his MMA career. He believes that Jones simply needs to perform at his best to secure victory, stating, “He’s just got to be Jon Jones. He’s good. He’s talented.”
Adding to the excitement, Cormier is set to provide expert commentary for the fight at UFC 295, ensuring fans will have a ringside view of the action. While Jones enters as the clear favorite, Cormier maintains that Miocic should not be underestimated.
“This guy’s the real deal and he’s there to win against Jon Jones in Madison Square Garden, which will essentially be a home game for Jones.”
As fight night approaches, fans eagerly await the electrifying clash between Miocic and Jones.
