Could We See Shawn Porter Vs. Terence Crawford?
With the boxing world on hold due to the coronavirus, the athletes who are isolating are looking to come out of this ready to get back to work. For Shawn Porter, the comeback may take a while but he will be ready for the call.
The former WBC Welterweight Champion hasn’t fought since his classic against Errol Spence Jr. back in September. Porter (30-3-1) was on a four-fight win streak prior to that loss. While he has been out, he has a list of fighters who he wants to face. Speaking on an Instagram Live session, Porter discussed his desire to face Terence Crawford.
In fact, Porter stated a fight with the WBO Welterweight Champion was in play before COVID-19 took over the world.
“Myself and Terence Crawford were going to have a conversation just before this hit,” Porter stated, via Boxing News 24. “I don’t know how that conversation was going to go, but you do want to see Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter. Those are the big fights that people need to see right at the jump. Forget warming up, forget ‘I need comeback fight,’ forget that. All that’s done in the gym, and you know that.”
Porter has faced some of the top fighters in boxing over the last few years. He has beaten a who’s who that includes Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner, Andre Berto, Danny Garcia and Yordenis Ugas. While he has an idea to have rematches with Ugas, Garcia and Kieth Thurman, Porter is thinking about dream matchups. That includes Spence and a legend at welterweight in Manny Pacquiao.
“If you train the right way, training is your warmup,” Porter went on to say. “The fight that everybody is supposed to see, Manny Pacquiao vs. Errol Spence, and I don’t know what that conversation with Terence Crawford was going to be like, but I think it was going to be a good one. So we can throw his name in there too.”
If he doesn’t get Crawford, Ugas or Pacquiao, Porter is interested in running it back with Spence. Following an epic comeback by both fighters, Spence won via split decision. Spence was then in a car accident that put his fight future up in the air. While he has healed up, it is unknown how ready he is to fight again. If Spence is ready, however, Porter would want to see the rematch as much as the fans do.
“He was talking about coming back in June or July,” said Porter on Spence. “We don’t know how long this thing is going to last,” said Porter on the COVID 19 pandemic. “But if we get past June, July or August or September even, we reset the whole clock. We want to see the best of the best. We need to see it immediately.”
