UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington got into a heated confrontation at the post-fight show desk following Covington’s win over Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark. Even then, Covington’s words and the intensity of their rivalry are only picking up from there.
Covington dominated Lawler, the former UFC welterweight champ, in a one-sided unanimous decision. that saw him set the UFC record for most significant strikes attempted with 515. UFC President Dana White recently confirmed that by way of the win — in his first fight in more than a year — the former interim champ will receive the first crack at Usman.
In the days since their post-fight confrontation, the controversial Covington — known for his outlandish, sometimes insensitive, verbal attacks and support of U.S. President Donald Trump — has continued to fire shots at the UFC’s 170-pound king.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Covington discussed his win over Lawler in Newark and threw in what appears to be a verbal jab based on Usman’s heritage.
“The world got to find out again who the best welterweight in the world is,” Covington said. “They got to see it again, over and over. It showed all the people who were doubting me, saying he was gonna knock me out, this and that. ‘Oh, he can’t beat him unless he takes him down every round!’ I proved that I can outstrike him, I can outwrestle him, I’m just better than everybody, everywhere and that’s why I’m the most well-rounded fighter on the planet and going down as the greatest welterweight of all time.
“Let’s be honest, I got a call from the President of the United States of America after the fight. What has Marty Fake Newsman ever got a call from, the chief tribe of Nigeria with smoke signals?”
But Covington was far from done there. He added that he feels Usman is not worthy of being a superstar and claimed Usman is trying to dodge him, further claiming he will be looking to get more money for their title fight as he never lost the interim belt. Covington was stripped of the title not long after winning it due to injuries making him unable to unify with then-champion Tyron Woodley.
This rant also included shots at Usman’s IQ, as well as the late Blackzilians founder Glenn Robinson. Usman won season 21 of The Ultimate Fighter, representing the Blackzilians against American Top Team, which Covington is a part of.
“The guy’s a piece of [expletive],” Covington said. “I’ve just heard from so many people how he’s so fake and he just acts like he’s some superstar and he acts like he’s better than people. He has no personality. Literally, Tyron Woodley had more charisma than him. Like, that’s sad. Tyron Woodley has zero charisma, so you know that’s in the negatives for Marty Fakenewsman. So, the guy’s a piece of [expletive]. I mean, he was ducking me so long that Glenn Robinson [who] was his manager, that Glenn Robinson died from it because he was ducking me so hard and wouldn’t fight me.”
