Covington Slams UFC’s BMF Title
Colby Covington has hit out at the existence of the UFC’s BMF title as nothing more than a ‘promotional tool.’
The belt came into being in 2019 when Nate Diaz squared off against Jorge Masvidal for the BMF title at UFC 244. On that occasion, Masvidal won via a third-round stoppage. And since Masvidal’s retirement, the UFC has a new BMF holder. Justin Gaethje secured the belt after stopping Dustin Poirier at UFC 291 in the second round. Despite holding that acclaimed title, Covington has downplayed its significance.
“It’s nothing more than a participation fight to cater to the guys that can never win an undisputed strap. Good for them. Their little side circus show, participation trophy, good for you, man, but you’re not the best, you’re not the undisputed champion. You’re just nothing more than a promotional tool. They were used to promote that fight because they needed a title fight to sell the pay-per-view, so good for them,” Covington stated
Outside of the BMF belt, Covington has his own world title aspirations. He is set to square off against the current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 on December 16th, 2023. Covington’s last fight was against the former BMF title holder, Masvidal, as he faces Edwards who will defend his title for the second time after beating Kamaru Usman in his last bout. So while the BMF title may not mean much, a win against Edwards would solidify Covington’s legacy.
