Crawford Continues Quest For Pacquiao, Spence
One of the top fighters of the welterweight division, Terence Crawford has been on a quest to prove he can take on boxing’s best. As the WBO Welterweight Champion, Crawford (36-0) has an idea of who he wants to face. The only factor involved is whether he will get the fights he wants.
The 32-year-old has made it his mission to face WBA Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao and IBF and WBC Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr. Speaking with ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe, Crawford discussed the order he would like to face both in, and why.
“[Manny] Pacquiao, then [Errol] Spence,” stated, via Boxing Scene. “I say Pacquiao because he don’t have that much longer in the sport. I would want that name on my resume.
“Then Spence because that’s the fight that everyone wants to see.”
Crawford has personally called out Spence (26-0), stating he has FaceTimed him and told Spence he would beat him. They have also traded jabs with one another on social media. After beating Mikey Garcia and Shawn Porter in 2019, Spence was involved in an accident where his car flipped over after speeding. Not wearing a seatbelt, Spence was ejected from the car. He suffered cuts to his face and damage to his teeth. Without a true opponent to face now that he is all healed up, a Spence-Crawford fight does sound like a possibility.
As for Pacquiao, he won the WBA Welterweight Title from Lucas Matthysse in 2018. It was a rebound fight after losing a controversial affair to Jeff Horn, losing the WBO Welterweight Title in the process. He has since added the WBA (Super) Welterweight Title to his collection, beating Keith Thurman last July via split decision.
Pacquiao has found new life since losing to Floyd Mayweather back in 2015. Coincidently, that is when Crawford had his eyes on him.
“Me, I’ve been trying to fight Pacquiao since 2015,” Crawford went on to say. “That’s not a secret that it’s a big fight I’ve been looking forward to. Back when I was trying to fight him, he was fighting guys like Brandon Rios, Jessie Vargas, Tim Bradley two more times. I don’t know what it was. I just think they didn’t like my style or whatever it was.
“Now that he’s at the last leg of his career, maybe it is about the money. For Pacquiao to get in the ring with me or Errol Spence, he’s going to have to get paid for it.”
Will Crawford end up getting a chance to fight Pacquiao or Spence?
