Crawford stopped Spence in the ninth round, which included three knockdowns, to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era.
The manner of his performance was all the more impressive, given that Spence had suffered a one-sided beating, offering little in return.
Although that may have been the case, Crawford took his time after the bell to thank Spence for working together to make the fight happen.
After all, there were serious concerns that the fight may never have happened with suggestions that Spence was considering moving up to 154 to fight Keith Thurman.
So Crawford’s following words put into perspective the difficulties that were there in making the fight.
“If it wasn’t for you, this would never have happened. So I appreciate you. You’re a helluva fighter; you already know that. I appreciate this opportunity,” Crawford
It remains to be seen whether Crawford will return the favor by giving Spence a rematch.
The ‘Truth’ expressed his desire to face Crawford once again at 154, something which the latter did not rule out.
And since Jermell Charlo will no longer be undisputed at 154 after his fight with Canelo Alvarez on September 30th, 2023, following the WBO’s ruling to strip him and make Tim Tszyu the full champion thereafter, Crawford may decide to take on Spence once again. Time will tell.
