Cro-Cop To Be Tested Prior To Bellator 200

After the controversy surrounding his signing with Bellator for their 200th event, Mirko Cro Cop will be drug tested prior to his fight with Roy Nelson.

MMA Fighting reported this week that Mohegan Tribe Athletic Regulation director Mike Mazzulli will be administering an out of competition drug test prior to Cro Cop’s fight with Nelson on May 25th.

Mazzulli’s commission is usually the main regulator for Bellator’s events outside of the United Statesm and Mazzulli will be in Budapest for Bellator 196 on April 6th, and will be taking a train to Croatia to administer the test on Cro Cop.

Mazzulli said the not only has Cro Cop’s opponent Roy Nelson been tested, but Gegard Mousasi, Phil Davis and David Rickels have all been tested out of competition prior to Bellator 200 and  have come back clean.

The issue for Cro Cop was a revelation while under UFC contract that he had taken HGH to help him recover from injury. Following his admission, Cro Cop would be released from his UFC contract, and suspended for two years by USADA.

Mazzulli, who also acts as the president of the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC), claims there would only be an issue if Cro Cop were suspended by a commission, and not just USADA.

“I always look out for the best interests of the fighters,” Mazzulli said. “Cro Cop has not fought in the United States for a while. He was suspended for two years. I’m 110-percent positive that if any other commission in the ABC — in the United States — if they had him suspended, I would not have him fight. I highly doubt Bellator would allow him to fight.”

Further more, Mazzulli claimed that as long as Cro Cop’s medical and drug tests come back clean, he is free to fight and USADA suspensions are only noted and not necessarily honored by the ABC.

“It’s a case-by-case basis,” Mazzulli said. “The USADA suspensions are placed on the MMA registry. … It’s a great informational tool to make an educated decision. At the end of the day, the more information we have, the better.”
