A major cruiserweight bout months in the making may finally be taking place in 2020. If all goes according to plan, it could end up serving under a fight featuring Matchroom’s biggest star.
Boxing Scene is reporting, via Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, that Krzysztof Glowacki and Lawrence Okolie will face off on the Anthony Joshua v. Kubrat Pulev undercard sometime in November. It is the first official fight that has been rumored for the card. The fight would be for the vacant WBO Cruiserweight Title.
Głowacki (31-2) turned professional in 2008. A former WBO Inter-Continental Cruiserweight Champion, Glowacki won the WBO Cruiserweight Title in 2015 before losing it to Oleksandr Usyk. He ended up winning five in a row, including the interim WBO Cruiserweight Title win against Maxim Vlasov in the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Quarter-Finals. He lost his last bout, and the title, to eventual winner Mairis Briedis, resulting in protests by his team.
Briedis was stripped of the belt after not complying with a request for a rematch with Glowacki by the WBO.
Okolie (14-0) made his professional debut in 2017. A Commonwealth and British Cruiserweight Champion, Okolie won the European Cruiserweight Title in October against Yves Ngabu. The 27-year-old is hoping to debut in the heavyweight division soon.
The two were rumored to fight around March or April, under a fight card featuring Gennadiy Golovkin v. Kamil Szeremeta. Plans didn’t come to fruition as a result of COVID-19.
As of now, Royal Albert Hall, Olympia, and the O2 Arena were recommended as locations for a fight between Joshua and Pulev. There is a chance it could be outside the UK, but Eddie Hearn is adamant he would like fans for the bout.
