Cruz-Avalos, Mares-Gutierrez Recap

Leo Santa Cruz successfully defended the WBA “Super” Featherweight Title against Chris Avalos in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) event from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Meanwhile, Abner Mares defended his WBA “Regular” Featherweight Title against Andres Gutierrez.

This almost guarantees we will finally see a rematch between Santa Cruz and Mares in the future.

Check out the results from each fight below.

WBA (Super) Featherweight Title: (c.) Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) vs. Chris Avalos (27-5, 20 KOs)

Leo Santa Cruz retained his championship against Chris Avalos via eighth-round TKO. Santa Cruz rocked his challenger early on with a left hook, and while Avalos was able to get in some shots to the body, he was eating a lot of punches. Through all the wild swinging for three rounds, Avalos threw more punches, but Santa Cruz landed more and his shots were more effective. The fourth round saw Santa Cruz land some hard shots to Avalos’ chin in round four before focusing on the body in round five. Avalos continued to try and stand his ground, but it wasn’t enough. At 1:34 into the eighth round, the referee stepped in and waved off the bout, giving Santa Cruz the TKO win.

WINNER: Leo Santa Cruz via TKO (Rd. 8, 1:34)

WBA (Regular) Featherweight Title: (c.) Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15 KOs) vs. Andres Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 KOs)

Abner Mares retained the WBA Featherweight Championship against Andres Gutierrez. The bout was absolute domination by Mares, who took control of the bout from the get-go. Mares fired away early on, and had he connected with an overhand right, it would have been disaster. Gutierrez was already cut open over his left eye by round two. Gutierrez tried to get on the inside in rounds three and four, but was unable to find an answer for Mares. Mares slowed down by the end of the sixth, but he was still in complete control. In fact, Mares wasn’t working the body as much, focusing on the head. Gutierrez’s best round came in the eighth, when the round was more even, but it wasn’t enough.

The fight ended in round 10 after Gutierrez was busted open badly on the left side of his face thanks to a couple of accidental fouls. The fight went to the judges scorecards, with all three judges giving the bout to Mares by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91.

WINNER: Abner Mares via unanimous decision

Eddie Ramirez (17-0-0, 11 KOs) vs. Antonio DeMarco (32-6-1, 23 KOs)

Antonio DeMarco ended the unbeaten record of the young Eddie Ramirez, scoring a win via first-round TKO. Both fights came out aggressive, though Ramirez seemed to be throwing the harder punches early on in the round. DeMarco, however, flipped the script and rushed the young prospect, overwhelming him with a flurry of punches he could not answer. The referee halted the bout just before the two-minute mark of the fight.

WINNER: Antonio DeMarco via TKO (Rd. 1, 1:56)
