Cruz Fires Back at Garbrandt, Talks Rematch

Dominick Cruz paid his respect to Cody Garbrandt after the Team Alpha Male product took his belt at UFC 207, but it was evident that the peace would be short-lived. The former champion has fired back at some of Garbrandt’s post-fight comments and addressed the potential rematch between the two rivals.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Cruz said he was not surprised that Garbrandt has held onto his animosity since the fight.

“I expect him to be mad at me from that camp," Cruz said. "I embarrassed him pretty good leading up to it with the things that I said which where the honest truth and he proved they were the truth by getting mad. But more than anything he keeps saying, ‘I’m at the top’ and ‘rematch, rematch.’ You’ve got the title. Why are you asking to rematch me?"

Garbrandt beat Cruz in convincing fashion over the course of five rounds, and the overwhelming choice as his next opponent was former champion T.J. Dillashaw, a former Team Alpha Male stablemate. Garbrandt, however, called for a rematch with Cruz.

“He knows that I am better than him. He wants the rematch because I’m the only fight that really raises the bar in this division.”

The most surprising part of the fight came when Garbrandt began to taunt Cruz, even resorting to breakdancing to frustrate the champion after demonstrating the kind of elusiveness that many had expected Cruz to bring to the cage.

Cruz, however, was not impressed in Garbrandt’s antics. Nor does he lend much thought to Cody’s claims that he could have finished the fight if he wasn’t having so much fun embarassing Cruz.

“If you’re in there to fight me fight me," Cruz said. "Don’t back up the whole time and dance… He’s trying to portray that he’s this tough guy that wanted it to go that long.”

Though Garbrandt has said he plans to give Cruz a rematch, there is no sign that the UFC will make that matchup rather than a grudge match against Dillashaw. Cruz says that his next fight will indeed be for the belt that he lost at UFC 207, but he’s not sure if Garbrandt will be the one holding it.

“Whenever I come back, I’m fighting for the title. I don’t know who it’s gonna be though.”
