Cyborg Eyes Boxing Bout Vs. Braekhus
Two of the top fighters in combat sports today may be on a collision course to clash.
Cris Cyborg, the current Bellator Featherweight Champion, has expressed interest in boxing. In fact, she was granted a boxing license in 2017. Now, her interest has sparked new talks for the next few months.
“I’m training a lot in boxing now,” Cyborg told TMZ Sports. “I was thinking about maybe I do my next fight in boxing.”
Last year, Cyborg (22-2, 1NC) signed a promotional deal with Bellator MMA after being let go by the UFC. She ended up beating Julia Budd at Bellator 238 to win the Featherweight Championship. As a result, she became one of the only fighters to hold gold in Bellator, the UFC, Strikeforce and Invicta. What was next for her after conquering the world of MMA? A bout with one of the best fighters in the world in Cecelia Braekhus.
“Me and Cecelia Braekhus always talk back and forth,” Cyborg went on to say. “But, you know, I’m training. I could see if she’s able to fight, then I could do fight too… I think everyone is going to be a very good match for me. It’s going to be a great fight. I like to challenge myself. I never look for the easy way. I like to train hard and make the best fight for my career, for my fans.”
Braekhus (36-0) is the current WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring Welterweight Champion. She is considered one of the top boxers out there today. One of the bouts that may be made is against the winner of Katie Taylor v. Amanda Serrano. Her last bout was a unanimous decision win over Victoria Bustos back in November. Scheduled to face Jessica McCaskill on April 17, the fight was postponed due to the coronavirus.
Following her win at Bellator 238, Cyborg was already planning for a bout in boxing. Bellator’s Scott Coker has stated in the past he is OK with her going into boxing. The promotion has a promotional deal with DAZN, as does Matchroom Boxing, who signed Braekhus to a multi-fight deal not long ago.
Who do you think would win in a bout between Cyborg and Braekhus?
