Dana: Khabib Can’t Sit Out Whole Year With Title

Following the punishment he was handed by the Nevada Athletic Commission, Khabib Nurmagomedov made it clear that he will not be fighting until November, even though his suspension ends in July.

The UFC lightweight champion chose November, as that is the same date his teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov’s one-year suspension ends for their role in the UFC 229 brawl in 2018.

“Guys can’t sit out and wait that long when you have the title,” White told reporters following UFC 234.

“You can’t do it. So if that’s true and he’s going to do that, then we’d have to figure out something else and you start looking at whether it’s Conor McGregor-Tony Ferguson or one of these other guys.”

While this could open the door for former interim champion Tony Ferguson and contender Dustin Poirier, White was ambiguous on what could come next at 155-pounds.

“When opportunity knocks, answer the door. We’ll see how this thing plays out.”
